π Right Now β Current Snapshot
Last updated: 4 June 2026
Phase: Recently moved to new home. Novelty wearing off, regulation fluctuating. Spending most time in/near bedroom β his safe zone. Not attending school since 2024.
Recent milestone: β¨ Independently used Proloquo to request "squeezes" after dysregulation β first spontaneous, intentional AAC use for emotional regulation. Significant self-advocacy breakthrough.
Current learning approach: Stabilisation-focused. Safety and regulation come first, with learning delivered ambiently through play, routines and investigations rather than formal instruction. AAC modelling embedded in daily routines.
What's working right now: People coming to him β he's engaged and present when others join his world on his terms. Enjoying "conversations" on his iPad. Low-demand connection in familiar spaces is landing well. Tolerance for having people in his room is strong.
What's hard right now: Room-bound, not leaving much at all. High connection needs: he seeks company and closeness a lot, which is developmentally meaningful and requires sustained one-to-one support to meet safely.
πΏ Our Method: JASPER
JASPER (Joint Attention, Symbolic Play, Engagement and Regulation) is the method underneath everything in this hub. It is an evidence-based, child-led approach that builds communication and connection by joining Fletcher's world rather than directing him. It is named here as our method because it is the engine that runs through every investigation and every weekly invitation, even where the word does not appear on the page.
You can see JASPER in the weekly template itself:
- Shared space: adults join Fletcher where he is (his nest, the trampoline, the tray), never looming or rushing.
- Follow his lead: "Set them up, walk away, mean it." Invitations are offered, never required.
- Shared attention: a mutual moment over the same object or play, with his gaze, gesture and vocalisation respected.
- Narrate, do not direct: declarative language only ("There's the F," never "What letter is this?").
- Anticipation and gentle variation: the same routine with a small twist (bounce, pause, hide, roll) to build curiosity.
- Balanced turns and simple routines: play co-created at his pace, predictable enough to feel safe.
The principle behind all of it is the same one that runs through the goals: opportunities, never expectations, and no response is still valid data. A fuller JASPER training unit for support workers (three short lessons, the fidelity markers and a daily self-check) sits alongside this hub for anyone joining Fletcher's world.
π©ββοΈ Current Therapy Focus
Update after each appointment. Date everything β it matters for NDIS evidence.
| Therapist | Role | Current focus | Last updated |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aoife Corcoran | Speech β The Play Projects | Low-demand, relationship-based approaches throughout all routines. Follow his lead β participate alongside, don't direct. Respond consistently to ALL communication attempts (Proloquo, gestures, body language, vocal). Simplify Proloquo navigation β pin most-used items to home page, explore iPad shortcuts so device is always accessible. Continue documenting wins as NDIS evidence. Support Tahlia in implementing goals through natural low-demand interactions. | 3 June 2026 |
| Brooke Gilmore | OT β Redlands CTC | Housing modifications and sensory needs strategies (current focus). Sensory regulation and body awareness ongoing. Oral care desensitisation through gradual familiarity. Telehealth format. Note: OT goals haven't been as explicitly discussed as speech goals lately β worth raising at next session: what are we actively working toward together? | β¬ Date |
| Ashleigh & Kristin (Monarch Wellbeing) | PBS β Monarch Wellbeing | New BSP provider confirmed June 2026 (replaced Naomi / Positive Moods). Practitioners Ashleigh and Kirsten. Onboarding with the parent-authored PBSP as the pack; goals to be confirmed at the first appointment. | β¬ Date |
| Tahlia | Support Worker (3hrs/wk NDIS + additional) | Low-demand activity approach β e.g. making biscuits, doing steps together in the corner of the room so Fletcher can join if he wants but is never asked to. No demand placed on him. Mix of: activity prep together, watching Fletcher, beginning Proloquo modelling, creating videos for Fletcher to watch and watching them together with him. Generally implementing the same therapy and learning approach as Nat. Goal: build toward consistent phrases, songs, and routines Tahlia uses β not established yet but wanted. | Ongoing |
Next appointments:
- Aoife (Speech): Mon 15 June @ 1pm
- β¬ Brooke (OT): possibly back next week β date TBC
- β¬ Monarch Wellbeing / Ashleigh + Kristin (PBS): date TBC
π Running Observations Log
Add dated notes here as you notice things. No structure needed β just capture. Small things count.
- (early May 2026) First spontaneous, intentional Proloquo request for "squeezes" after dysregulation: his first spontaneous AAC use for emotional self-advocacy (documented in Aoife's 6 May speech note) β¨
- (4 June 2026) Used Proloquo to call Nat from another room to get her attention: communication across distance, a further milestone β¨
- (5 June 2026) TikTok channel @words.with.fletch created for AAC modelling β plan is to post videos of Proloquo use and modelling in daily life, and seed the algorithm so Fletcher sees AAC modelling naturally in his own feed. Connects video modelling (well-evidenced for AAC learners) with his existing TikTok engagement. β¨
- (5 June 2026) Enjoying "conversations" on his iPad β engaging interactively rather than just passively watching. People coming to his room is working well as a connection approach.
